“Let’s start at the very beginning…a very good place to start. When we read, we begin with A B C…” The song from the Sound of Music makes perfect sense as we look at how our kindergarten students come to our school. They are just learning their ABCs, putting sounds together, making sentences, and recognizing that graphics have word meaning. Providing multiple nonfiction literature sources on the beginning reading levels (A, B, C, etc.) will continue to stimulate our youngest students’ interests in reading and understanding nonfiction science.
