Carroll Education Foundation's Grant Recipients and Sponsors 2010

Books of Hope is a service-learning program that allows schools to select a sister school in Uganda and create exposity textbooks to meet the students' educational needs. The creation of textbooks follows a year-long study of Hopeful Voices, a powerful collection of essays written by students from around the world who want to share life lessons learned as a result of intense challenges they have faced. Mini research lessons, writing prompts, and interdisciplinary study takes place in response to each of articles the students read. Our students instantly become authors for an eager audience of their peers, while reinforcing their own learning by "teaching" about the material through the ebooks. This program also fosters empathy and social responsibility in students by providing an effective way for them to learn about and make a difference in the lives of children facing war, poverty, disease, and slavery around the world.
