Some students are hesitant to read and their fear of not doing well decreases their confidence. As a result, these children practice reading less and this contributes to their dislike of reading. Establishing an environment and partnership which fosters confidence and reduces stress allows children the opportunity to try out new skills and strengthen others while learning to read aloud. In Tales with Tollway students will be partnered with Tollway, our counselor’s dog, who is a dachshund registered with Delta Society Pet Partners and R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs). Just sitting next to Tollway will reduce anxiety because he is less intimidating than peers and will be a positive association for children who have struggled with reading. Teachers will refer students to the counselor and reading sessions will be scheduled with Tollway. Animal-themed books on various levels will be used as well as other books that are being read in the classroom. Bookmarks with Tollway’s picture will be provided to students as a reminder of the importance of reading for pleasure and purpose.
